Claudia Sheinbaum, the virtual first president of our country, announced her project to connect Mexico with passenger trains.
On Wednesday, July 10, she presented the routes that the trains will have. The first will go from Mexico City to Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. It will pass through eight states of our country: Hidalgo, State of Mexico, Querétaro, Guanajuato, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, Coahuila and Nuevo León.
The construction of this work, according to Sheinbaum’s estimates, will take five years. It will begin on October 1, 2023 and will end on December 13, 2029.
“We are already studying the first thing, which is the right of way. We have to come to an agreement with the concessionaires, because the idea is that they keep their freight concession, but the idea is that in the same right of way, we can make the passenger trains,” said Sheinbaum.

She explained that the B line of the National Railway System will be used. The length of the project is approximately 252 kilometers.
She recalled that in the decree granting the right of way it is stated that if the private sector does not develop the passenger train, the State has the preponderance to develop it.
What other passenger train routes does Sheinbaum have?
The former head of government also announced the second passenger train route, which will depart from the Mexican capital to the city of Guadalajara, in the western state of Jalisco, passing through the states of Querétaro and Guanajuato, in the center of the country.
“That would connect, in due time, I hope that there is time for us too, to Nogales (Sonora, on the northern border), along the Pacific,” she said.
The Morena party member is also studying another route, as is being done in the construction of the Mexico-AIFA (Felipe Ángeles International Airport) train, of “moving the freight train tracks and putting the passenger train with new tracks.”
“It would be more expensive, but it would still give it the possibility of being a confined train, which can be up to 160 kilometers per hour, like the Mayan Train, and which can reach Nuevo Laredo,” said the next governor.
In total, Sheinbaum said that the objective is to enable more than 3,500 kilometers of railroad tracks with works, which like the Mayan Train, would be divided between military engineers and private companies, which would take around 5 years.
