As part of the activities of the third edition of the Summer Course “Guardians of the Sea of Cozumel” that the Municipal Government is carrying out from July 15 to August 15, the young members had the opportunity to participate in the first two activities of the educational-ecological program, with the conference “Ambassadors of the Reef” and the Concert “Planet Seed: Life Begins in the Sea”.

The coordinator of the Municipal Public Library, Eva María Merino Sánchez, explained that as in its first edition, this summer course “Guardians of the Sea of Cozumel” aims to promote reading in the community through fun activities focused on environmental education so that young people are disseminators and active guardians of Cozumel’s natural resources, especially the great biodiversity that exists in the sea, in order to fulfill the mandate of the municipal president, Juanita Alonso, to promote a generation that helps protect their island.

45 young people between 13 and 17 years of age from various schools on the island are participating in this summer course. Last Monday, they were welcomed with the first activity, the “Ambassadors of the Sea” conference, with the representative in Mexico of the Jean-Michel Cousteau´s Ocean Futures Society Foundation, Rodrigo Navarro, at the “Gonzalo de J. Rosado Iturralde” municipal public library.

Meanwhile, this Tuesday, July 16, the Guardians of the Sea of Cozumel delighted their ears with the masterful presentation of the local group “Alebrije Musical” in the concert titled “Planeta Semilla: La Vida Empieza en el Mar” (Planet Seed: Life Begins in the Sea), where the main objective of its four members is for all participants to connect with nature through the music that was sung and followed by the attendees using their voices and pods from the Flamboyant tree.

It is worth noting that this summer course aims to train new generations committed to caring for the environment through different artistic, cultural, educational activities, talks and excursions, among others, which will end on September 16 with a dive to the seabed aboard the submarine “Atlantis.”
