
The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) announced on Thursday that the public consultation to declare a Flora and Fauna Protection Area (APFF) in the municipalities of Solidaridad, Cozumel and Tulum, all in the state of Quintana Roo, is beginning.
In a statement, the federal department explained that this APFF named Felipe Carrillo Puerto, a recognized leader of the Mexican Revolution, wants to “strengthen a continuum of jungles” typical of this area in the southeast of the country.
Also the “coastal wetlands that provide shelter and food for flora and fauna,” in addition to contributing to flood control, functioning as a “barrier” against hurricanes and favoring pollination.
Today, Semarnat published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) the notice so that the authorities and people involved, as well as the affected indigenous peoples or research centers, analyze the Preliminary Justification Study (EPJ) on which the decree for the creation of said area will be based.
The text prepared by the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp) will be in public consultation for 30 calendar days, according to the secretariat.
«This site is of great importance for the protection of more than 1,660 species of animals and plants, among which the black howler monkey and the spider, the jaguar, the shrew, the tropical porcupine or the ocellated turkey stand out», the statement detailed.
In addition, «at least» 34 pollinating species will also be included in the protection of the area, such as the cinnamon hummingbird or the fruit bat.
These joint actions between Semarnat and Conanp «strengthen the care of biodiversity and ecosystem services» to also «favor» the quality of life of the citizens of the area.
