From January to December 2023, 31,062 murders were recorded in the country, an average of 85 victims per day in preliminary figures published this Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

Although the figure mentioned is less than the 33,287 victims of 2022, it is confirmed that during the six-year term of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador more than 31 thousand murders were committed per year, which means that there is a stagnation of homicidal violence at high levels.

According to the Inegi report, at the national level, the rate was 24 homicides per 100 thousand inhabitants, and the main means used to cause homicides was the firing of firearms, with 70%, followed by the use of knives, with 9.5% and hanging, strangulation and suffocation, with 7%.

The states with the most murders last year were; Guanajuato, which registered 3,746; State of Mexico, 2,849; Baja California, 2,642; Chihuahua, 2,396, in absolute numbers.

The Inegi figures come from the administrative records of accidental and violent deaths generated by the states and compiled monthly by INEGI.

The reporting sources are 321 Civil Registry Offices, 105 Forensic Medical Services and 236 Public Prosecutor’s Offices that had at least one homicide record.
