The Mexican government on Wednesday expressed its rejection of any action contrary to international law that threatens the lives of people, following the events that occurred last Tuesday in Tehran, Iran, where the leader of the Islamist group Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, died.
Through social networks, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a message in which it reports the Mexican government’s repudiation of actions that violate the sovereignty of countries, undermine efforts to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and affect the stability of the Middle East region.
The Mexican government’s statement comes after the increase in tensions between countries in the Middle East. Following the attacks carried out by Israel on the territory of Lebanon and Iran.
“Mexico reiterates its call to respect the basic norms of international coexistence and asks all parties to exercise self-restraint, in order to avoid an endless spiral of violence in the Middle East,” adds the message from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
On Wednesday, countries on the United Nations Security Council called for diplomatic efforts to be stepped up to prevent a wider conflict in the Middle East, after the assassinations of two militant leaders raised tensions.
“We fear that the region is on the brink of all-out war,” said Shino Mitsuko, Japan’s deputy representative to the UN, urging the international community to make efforts to prevent such a conflict.
On the other hand, the Lebanese Hezbollah group confirmed the death of commander Fuad Shukr in an Israeli attack outside Beirut, making him the highest-ranking figure in the movement to have lost his life in nearly 10 months of conflict with Israel.
The attack hit the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital, a Hezbollah stronghold, at dusk on Tuesday. It was the second time the area had been attacked since October, when Hezbollah and Israel began exchanging fire in parallel with the Gaza war.
