Four out of 10 people infected with dengue are minors, according to Jaime Álvarez Zayas, director of the VIII Health Region of the Jalisco Health Secretariat.
This phenomenon, explained the doctor by profession, is occurring with serotype 3, which affects people between 4 and 17 years of age, unlike other serotypes that were more common among adults between 30 and 45 years of age.
The theory that it is affecting this age group is due to the fact that their immune system is still developing, said Álvarez Zayas.
This is an unusual situation, so attention should be paid to this population group, where a case of dengue in infants or adolescents was previously unheard of.
In addition, the symptoms they show are unusual, since they do not correspond to the symptoms known in adults such as fatigue, intense headache or pain in the eye sockets, muscle pain and general malaise.
Álvarez Zayas explained that this disease in children and adolescents has symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain, so it could be confused with a gastrointestinal infection.
