Grupo Xcaret denied through a statement that it has requested environmental permission for the tourist project in Santa Elena, despite the Environmental Impact Statement (MIA) presented with the code 31YU2024UD049 before Semarnat, as reported by Noticaribe.

“Grupo Xcaret informs that it has not requested any authorization for the change of use of forest land, in relation to the Environmental Impact Statement of a tourist infrastructure project in Santa Elena, Yucatán,” the statement said, adding that the MIA does not belong to that corporation.

The MIA presents a project of nine hotels with a maximum capacity of 16,200 guests, which would be four times the population of the town of Santa Elena, clearly impacting its environment and access to services such as drinking water.

As reported by REPORTUR.mx, the environmental group Greenpeace recently asked the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) not to authorize the Xcaret project in the municipality of Santa Elena, arguing that urbanization and real estate speculation would affect the culture and biodiversity of the Mayan jungle.

The project would have a total investment of 400 million pesos and would be in an area of influence of the Protected Natural Area called “Biocultural State Reserve of the Puuc” with 746,770 square meters for the sale of residential lots.
