The heavy rains recorded this Saturday in San Cristóbal de Las Casas caused severe flooding in various parts of the city, creating dangerous situations for the inhabitants. In one of the most alarming incidents, a man was swept away by the strong current of water that accumulated on Insurgentes Avenue, one of the busiest streets in the city, in front of the OCC terminal, one of the busiest areas of the city.
The man was about to be swept into a sewer of the aqueduct due to the force of the water, but fortunately passersby who were passing by the place managed to rescue him before a tragedy occurred. Witnesses at the scene reported the rapid rise in the water level, which turned the street into a dangerous torrent in a matter of minutes.
At the same time, the Yellow River, which runs through the city, reached its maximum capacity, generating concern among the neighbors of the surrounding areas. The strong currents not only swept people away, but also caused significant material damage; motorcycles were seen trapped under parked vehicles, unable to withstand the force of the water.

Likewise, in some places, hail could be seen and cars where the water reached halfway, so they had to stop to avoid being swept away.
Municipal and Civil Protection authorities have warned the population to take precautions and avoid traveling through the affected areas while they continue to assess the damage and provide assistance to those affected by the floods. The rains are expected to continue in the next few hours, so citizens have been asked to stay informed and follow the safety instructions issued by the authorities.
