The Congress of the State of Campeche approved a reform to the local Civil Code so that people from the LGBT community, and the general public, can request a change of name and gender on their birth certificate more quickly, without the need to file for an injunction.

In Campeche, the LGBT community will be able to modify their birth certificate more easily

With 30 votes in favor and one against, Congress approved adding an additional chapter to the Civil Code, called “On the Lifting of the New Civil Registry Act”, which makes it easier for members of the community to modify their name and gender identity on the birth certificate.

This new law applies only to adults, and for the moment excludes trans children. Despite this, this is a great advance in the state of Campeche for the fight of the LGBT community, for human rights, and the right to gender recognition.

According to the new law in Campeche, those interested in modifying their birth certificate must go to the Civil Registry and request the procedure by presenting the following documents:

A duly completed application, in which the free consent to the recognition of their self-perceived gender identity is expressed
A certified copy of the birth certificate
Also, the original and a photocopy of their voter ID card
