The Government of Tlaxcala obtained the Guinness World Record for the largest variety of basket tacos served in one place.
The event took place this Sunday in Mexico City on Paseo de la Reforma, where the world representatives counted the 30 thousand tacos, which were distributed in 150 baskets containing between 300 and 400 tacos each.
There were 205 varieties of tacos, including the classic ones made of pressed pork rinds, beans and potatoes, as well as exotic stews such as pork rinds with Jamaica or potatoes with nuts that were made by more than 150 taco makers from San Vicente Xiloxochitla.
The president of that municipality, Yair Linares, affirmed that for more than 80 years, basket tacos have been made in the community that he governs, for which he asked for applause and recognition for the people who dedicate themselves to their preparation.
In her speech, the Secretary of Tourism of Mexico City, Nathalie Veronique Desplas, stressed the importance of tacos de canasta in the daily life of citizens and the consumption of this Mexican dish that was adopted by the chilangos but is originally from Tlaxcala.
“This dish, simple in appearance, but full of traditional flavor, has long been the favorite in our city. It is the daily companion of thousands of people, a true icon of our culinary identity,” she said.
After the count, the taco makers began to distribute the tacos among the attendees who were eager to taste them.
Among the taco makers was Leticia, who for 30 years has been dedicated to cooking and selling tacos de canasta in Tlaxcala, a tradition that was inherited by her father.
It is our source of work, and we are grateful to the people, the teachers, students, bricklayers, everyone, who support us in buying to support our family,” she said.
Accompanied by her two children, the taco maker said that the taco she sells the most is the one with pressed pork rinds.
At the end of the count, the representatives of the Guinness World Record presented the recognition to the governor of Tlaxcala, Lorena Cuéllar, who indicated that they will continue to format tourism in the state and will work to exalt the state because “Tlaxcala does exist.”
This is the second Guinness record that Tlaxcala obtains. The first was achieved with the longest sawdust carpet in the world, created in the municipality of Huamantla during “The Night That Nobody Sleeps,” as part of the celebrations in honor of the Virgin of Charity.
