
Mexico received 2.9% more international tourists last June than in the same month of 2023, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported on Monday.
3.69 million foreign tourists arrived in the country in the sixth month of 2024, compared to 3.59 million in the same period of the previous year, according to the report of the autonomous body.
The main annual increase occurred in border tourists, who in June grew by 11.3% year-on-year to exceed 1.42 million people.
Those who arrived by air only increased by 0.1% to 1.9 million.
Total spending by international tourists rose 0.9% year-on-year in June to $2,364.5 million.
In contrast, the average spending of each tourist fell by 2% year-on-year to $639.4 last June.
Tourism sector maintains stabilization and upward trend
The data reflect a stabilization of the upward trend of tourism in Mexico, which had 42.15 million international tourists during 2023, 10% more than in 2022.
The income of foreign currency from international visitors in 2023 was 28,682.6 million dollars, almost 9% more than the previous year.
The economy related to tourism, which Inegi calls tourism gross domestic product (GDP), grew 7.4% annually in the first quarter of 2024, driven in particular by services and domestic tourists.
Mexico was the sixth most visited country in the world in 2022 and 2023, according to the Government and businessmen based on data from the World Tourism Organization.
