Mexican drivers know this all too well. Toll booths, those toll stations located on Mexican roads and highways with the sole purpose of collecting fees for using the roads, can mean a large outlay depending on the roads that need to be used daily. That’s why the news from the government of a discount of up to half the price may interest you.
The announcement. The country’s drivers received bad news recently. Caminos y Puentes Federales de Ingresos y Servicios Conexos (Capufe) announced an increase in the rates for highways and bridges concessioned by the National Infrastructure Fund. In this way, all drivers had to face around a 3% increase in toll fees.
The help. However, as we said, there is help in the form of a discount of up to half the price for vehicle owners. Yes, it is an available program with which citizens can benefit from a 50% discount, an option to mitigate the impact of the increase announced by Capufe in tolls.
Who is it aimed at? As the government has explained, this aid is not available to all road users, but it is available to a large number of them. In essence, the beneficiaries of the Residents Program can apply for the discount, which is available and in force in 29 toll booths, a program designed specifically for those who live in areas or areas close to these locations.
Its reason for being is simple: to relieve those who, living in areas adjacent to the booths, do not have to pay extra for the price increases. In short: to alleviate the financial burden for those who have no choice but to pass through these tolls daily, whether due to work or educational commitments.
Not all vehicles. In addition, there is another “but” to the government’s initiative. Vehicles for residents who can benefit from the 50% initiative do not include cargo vehicles, only light-duty trucks and “normal” cars.
Requirements. Citizens who fall within the parameters established by the government must go to the Mexican Government website to enter the resident program through the Resident Assistance Module. Then, the following required documents must be provided:
INE voter ID with an address in one of the authorized towns.
Recent residence letter issued by the H. Constitutional Municipal Council.
Proof of address no more than three months old, valid if it is for electricity, water, telephone, or for the last year in the case of property tax.
Vehicle invoice in the name of the applicant, with the option of accepting endorsements or a current invoice letter.
Circulation card in the name of the applicant.
Fill out and sign the application form.

When they give me the “yes”. After going through the previous process, the resident citizen must wait for the government notification, which will be evaluated by the Banobras dealer or the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) in Capufe.
Once we have received the notification as approved, the citizen will be able to acquire an IAVE type card through the corresponding agency to obtain the discount when traveling.
