This is how the Sinaloa Cartel promoted the candidacy of Rubén Rocha Moya, according to Anabel Hernández

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador recently expressed his support for the governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya, following the accusations of drug trafficker Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel captured in the United States, who over the weekend stated that on the day of his surrender to the authorities he planned to meet with the state governor and the former rector of the Autonomous University of Sinaloa (UAS), Héctor Melesio Cuén Ojeda, to resolve certain conflicts.

During a public event in Culiacán, the capital of Sinaloa, López Obrador expressed his “total confidence” in the governor, while Rocha Moya flatly denied any link with organized crime, declaring that he had no complicity with anyone and that the accusations against him were intended to tarnish both his image and that of the president.

The president mentioned that on the day of Zambada’s capture he was in Los Angeles, California. Then, this Sunday, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) issued a statement in which it assured that it has contacted the governor to provide information on these accusations.
For his work in the investigation of drug trafficking and corruption in Mexico, he has raised serious accusations regarding the relationship between Rubén Rocha Moya and the Sinaloa Cartel.

In his book entitled “The Secret History: AMLO and the Sinaloa Cartel,” Hernández García examines how drug trafficking has permeated Mexican politics, focusing especially on the influence that organized crime exerts on public officials.

According to Hernández, Los Chapitos, sons of the well-known drug trafficker El Chapo Guzmán, have managed to build and maintain their empire not only through the use of terror and financial control, but also with the crucial support of local and federal authorities.

The rise of Los Chapitos was consolidated in the 2018 electoral process when, according to various testimonies, the inner circle of Los Chapitos openly expressed their support for AMLO and Rubén Rocha Moya, candidate for senator of the Juntos Haremos Historia coalition. According to Hernández, Jimmy Fernández, a close friend of Iván Archivaldo Guzmán, would have encouraged political support for Rocha Moya and AMLO.

Rubén Rocha Moya, from Badiraguato, Sinaloa, the place of origin of Chapo Guzmán, had already had prominent political participation before his candidacy for senator in 2018. He was a candidate for the governorship of Sinaloa in 1998 for the PRD, lost on that occasion but won in strategic municipalities for the Sinaloa Cartel.

The book claims that Rocha Moya received financial support from Los Chapitos with a view to a future candidacy for governor, describing it as a long-term investment. According to a witness, José Ángel Canobbio, a close member of El Chapo’s sons, maintained direct contact with one of Rocha Moya’s sons.

Hernández García notes in her book how even from his first days as a senator, Rocha Moya also boasted of having contact with El Mayo Zambada: “He even mentioned him with members of Morena in Sinaloa, as if that gave him some kind of higher status,” it reads. This is how in 2021, Rocha Moya already had the “blessing” of Zambada García to compete for the governorship.

Likewise, in addition to describing how they injected money into Rocha Moya’s campaign, the journalist explains how even music played a decisive role in his election as governor in the 2022 process, when musicians, through narcocorridos, acted as a vehicle of support and promotion, reflecting and amplifying the power and influence of drug traffickers in the public and political sphere.

“In the campaign, El Nini himself made tours in his red Lamborghini Urus truck with a Morena logo stuck on the back. Rocha Moya’s commitment to Los Chapitos was that he would give them the State Public Security Secretariat (SSP); they wanted César Abelardo Rubio as secretary, who held that position in Culiacán in 2016 and was close to their criminal group,” she said. In the end, the agreement was not fulfilled.

According to other texts by the journalist, they also agreed that he would stop any persecution against Los Chapitos and would reject arrest warrants for extradition purposes.
