President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said on Tuesday that despite the potential, a better result was not achieved at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games because it came from a “decadent” period, and stated that he is already preparing a ceremony to receive the athletes who participated.
“Mexico has a lot of potential in everything, they helped a lot, but we come from a decadent period of 36 years, imagine, a country where a group, a gang of ruffians, is dedicated only to looting and the people are completely abandoned,” said the president in reference to the support for sports in previous governments.
The country obtained a total of five medals in the recently concluded summer competition, three silver and two bronze, which was enough to place it in 65th place in the general medal table, below the goal of equaling the eight achieved in London 2012, the best performance of a Mexican delegation.
The president said he is proud of the performance of Mexican athletes in Paris 2024 despite questions about the lack of government support, and acknowledged their effort, discipline and, above all, the support given to them by their families and coaches.
“Support has been given to everyone and we will continue to do so, let it not be forgotten. Of course, there are questions, this is normal in a truly democratic society, there cannot be a single thought, you cannot protest with clenched teeth, the right to dissent must be guaranteed,” he said.
He also said that the problem that conservatives have is that “they have not understood, they refuse to understand that there have been rearrangements” in “society, that the mentality of the people has already changed.”
And, I tell you in advance, because it does not even cross your mind, it is that the people have already been empowered.
At the recently concluded Olympic Games, Mexico won silver medals thanks to Prisca Awiti (women’s judo 63 kilos), Osmar Olvera and Juan Celaya (synchronized diving 3 meters springboard) and Marco Verde (boxing -71 kilos).
In addition to bronze medals in women’s team archery (Alejandra Valencia, Ana Paula Vázquez and Ángela Ruiz) and in individual 3 meter springboard diving (Osmar Olvera).
In addition, 19 Mexicans were among the eight best in the world in different events.
The Government of Mexico has committed to giving economic prizes to the silver and bronze medalists, to whom it will award two and one million pesos respectively.
