Tourists stop arriving at Tulum and the Mayan Museum in Cancun

Turistas dejan de llegar a Tulum y al Museo Maya de Cancún.

Both the Cancun Mayan Museum and the Tulum Archaeological Zone have shown a decrease in the number of visitors, both foreign and national, according to data from the Institutional System of Visitor Statistics of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).

The report indicates that the Tulum Archaeological Zone showed a decrease of 23.6% compared to July 2023, while the Mayan Museum had a decrease of 18%; it is important to highlight that this decrease has occurred in all the archaeological zones of the state.

Last year, Quintana Roo ended with 1 million 920 thousand 698 visitors, of which 65% were foreign population, while this 2024 the figure stands at 1 million 86 thousand 108 visitors, increasing foreign interest by 4%

Even with this drop in numbers, Tulum continues to be the third most visited archaeological zone in Mexico with 684 thousand 292 visitors so far, being surpassed only by Chichen Itza with 1 million 379 thousand 469 tourists, and Teotihuacán with 952 thousand 573.

These data are important, since Tulum is an essential part of the investments made by the federal government, and the private sector, taking into account projects such as the Tulum International Airport or the Mayan Train.

These places will have a direct connection to a hotel located within the Jaguar National Park, close to the archaeological zone of Tulum, which will have about 352 rooms and is still under construction with 48% progress, according to the latest report presented by the National Defense Secretariat.

The decrease in visitors to the archaeological zone of Tulum presents a challenge for local communities and service providers. However, with the implementation of measures to improve the visitor experience, it is expected to reverse this trend and continue to be one of the most important tourist destinations in Mexico.
