Riviera Maya: dolphinarium at Barceló hotel to be closed

Several activists have joined together to demand that the Hotel Maya Grand Resort – better known as the Hotel Barceló and located in the Riviera Maya – close its dolphinarium, one of the smallest in the region, because they believe it promotes animal abuse.

According to the Animal Heroes organization, the dolphinarium at the Hotel Barceló, near Playa del Carmen, is one of the smallest in all of Mexico. “It is a pool with chlorinated water where dolphins are permanently exposed to the sun, which causes damage to their skin and eyes; in just one year, two dolphins died in that dolphinarium without a clear explanation of what happened to them to date,” the group highlights in a statement.

Organizations such as Peta Latino, Dolphin Freedom, Océanos de Vida Libre, Red de Bienestar Animal de Quintana Roo, PRO Animal, Animalistas de la Costa, Karla Munguía, Keiko, Proyecto Galgo and Derechos Animales Marinos, urged the public to “join in the demand for the closure of these spaces that promote animal abuse.” They also called for a demonstration in the vicinity of the Hotel Barceló branch in Mexico City, on Paseo de la Reforma Avenue.

Activist groups have demonstrated on several occasions, within the Empty the Tanks movement, to propose a transition towards the prohibition of shows with dolphins.
