Mexico City Congress approves cap on housing rents

Aprueba Congreso de CDMX tope a rentas de vivienda

The plenary session of the Mexico City Congress approved this Thursday a reform in housing matters to impose a cap on rent increases in the capital.

The modification to the Civil Code and the Housing Law stipulates that the rent will never be greater than the inflation reported by the Bank of Mexico the previous year, “with respect to the amount agreed as monthly rent.” The previous legislation established that the increase could not exceed 10 percent of the agreed amount.

In addition, the creation of a digital registry in charge of the capital government was approved in which landlords in Mexico City must enter their rental contracts.
