President Andrés Manuel López Obrador rejected the call for dialogue by the United States ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, on the reform of the Judicial Branch, because it is an issue that only corresponds to Mexicans.
“Would you not discuss this issue with him?” he was asked at his morning press conference on Monday, August 26, at the National Palace.
“No, it is an issue for Mexicans and it is being resolved in the institutions of our country,” responded President López Obrador.
The President said that they are trying to get around it, “by the branches,” saying that since there is a trade agreement “we can get involved.”
“No, the Treaty is not for Mexico to become an appendix in a colony, in an associated state, even if there are Mexicans who would like that,” he said.
He assured that there is no dispute with Ambassador Salazar, because it is only to clarify that we are independent and sovereign countries, very respectful of our relationship of friendship and cooperation.
“It is not possible for a foreign ambassador to express an opinion on what is right or wrong in our country, that is not the role of an ambassador,” he said.
Last week, Ambassador Salazar called for dialogue in the face of the controversy over his criticism of the reform of the Judicial Branch and the direct election of judges.
“There must always be dialogue, the issue is that issues related to Mexico are our responsibility, no foreigners or foreign governments can come to deal with issues that only concern Mexicans,” insisted López Obrador.
