Rains in San Cristóbal and Comitán leave 50 homes affected; nine families evacuated

Large puddles were caused by the rains of the last few hours in San Cristóbal de Las Casas and Comitán de Domínguez, located in the Altos and Tojolabal regions; more than 50 houses and streets were affected.

In San Cristóbal de Las Casas, the houses that were flooded are located in the Vergel, Prudencio Moscoso, San Antonio del Monte and Maravilla neighborhoods, where the water level reached up to 70 centimeters.

​Civil Protection authorities indicated that in the Monte de los Olivos neighborhood, severe structural damage was reported in a home on the street that leads to Milpoleta, which continues to fade with a high risk of collapse.

In addition, they reported that damage was recorded that could cause houses in the lower part, therefore a total of nine families, which translates to 37 people, were evacuated to a temporary shelter.

What other years have heavy rains been reported in Chiapas?

In the central area of ​​the tourist city, water accumulated for a few hours on the El Carmen walkway, without any major damage being reported. The Amarillo and Fogótico rivers are reported at 70 percent of their capacity.

In Comitán, the presence of rainfall and gusts of wind generated the phenomenon called wind snake, which caused the detachment of sheet metal roofs in at least 22 homes, of which four were total losses and 18 with partial damage.

The Civil Protection delegation also reported the fall of seven trees in the Yalchivol neighborhood and Belisario Domínguez neighborhood on the first of May street and the extension of the second east-south avenue.

So far, no human losses or injuries have been reported, while emergency personnel are on site carrying out cleaning and dredging of drains due to the accumulation of garbage and stone material.
