In March 2024, the Mexican Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) launched a Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) essay contest for elementary and high school students, asking them to write an essay in English on how to collaborate to increase sustainable cruise ship arrivals.
The Baja California Ministry of Tourism coordinated the contest in bilingual schools in the Port of Ensenada, where Gloria Platero, from Unifront Secondary School, won in the Senior category, and Diego González, from Padson International School, in the Junior category. The essays were sent to the Federal Ministry of Tourism.
Gloria Platero was selected as the national winner in the Senior category. Her essay highlights the importance of eco-tours to promote sustainability, such as tours along the Wine Route and visits to sustainable farms, which helps to conserve local initiatives and enriches the tourist experience.
Collaborating with businesses
In her conclusion, Gloria emphasizes that although cruise tourism generates economic benefits, it is essential to collaborate with local businesses to ensure that the income stays in the communities, promoting sustainable growth and improving the well-being of residents.
Baja California Tourism Secretary Miguel Aguíñiga Rodríguez expressed his pride in Gloria’s achievement, highlighting that her success reflects the effort and dedication of the region’s students. In addition, he wished her the best in the international competition, confident that she will continue to achieve important achievements.
Finally, the Baja California Tourism Secretariat congratulated Gloria Platero for her outstanding performance in representing Mexico in the international essay contest.
