The work is arduous on the Plaza Patria esplanade where the Cirque Du Soleil team is in full swing setting up to welcome the Guadalajara public from September 19 to October 20 through the show “Kurios.” This Saturday afternoon the Soleil Big Top was raised where the press was able to see how the work is being carried out so that everything is perfect for the premiere.
David Constantino, site director, who is part of the logistics of the set-up, highlighted that 200 people are working, 100 from the circus team and 100 locals. “The most complicated thing for us is raising the tent due to weather issues, since this Saturday there was no wind and this was perfect for being able to raise it.”
The work began a week ago and this Saturday was the second day of the installation of the big top, which is 51 meters in diameter with a capacity for 2,600 people. There are two masts in the tent, one of them is 25 meters high. And it will take five more days to complete the entire installation.
Regarding security measures, he stressed that they follow the same procedures that they already have in place and that they apply in each city where they perform. There are 75 trailers that arrive in Guadalajara with 20 thousand tons of equipment.
In addition, David recalled that the tent canvas is renewed every 10 years, while the structure is constantly maintained so that it does not have to be changed.
On the other hand, Poncho Verdugo, originally from Tijuana, who has been part of the Cirque Du Soleil production for five years, shared that he started in the shows “Joya” and “Messi.” In “Kurios,” Poncho is a technician in the carpentry and props department, “mainly we take care of the stage, this is the show that has the largest number of props in the entire circus, about 454, it’s a whole truck full. And when there are shows, my job is to be able to move around in different departments, sometimes I do sound, among other activities.”
Poncho highlights that for him it has been a great experience to be part of this family because he feels a lot of creative freedom. “I am a music production engineer by profession so all this feels like being at home.” In addition, he highlights that other things that draw his attention being part of Cirque Du Soleil is that he has the opportunity to meet people from other countries and cultures that make him reflect on his own roots and customs.
This is the first time that “Kurios” comes to Mexico and the opening is in Guadalajara, so it will be a new moment for the people of Guadalajara who will have the show for five weeks. For those who wish to experience the show’s amenities, the “GNP Experience” can be purchased, with which the public can arrive an hour early and enjoy snacks. Tickets are already on sale through the Ticketmaster system.
