First Influenza Death Confirmed in Yucatán; Alert Issued Due to Increase in Cases

Health authorities report that Yucatán continues to lead the nation in terms of infections; from May to October, 453 cases were recorded.

Federal health authorities confirmed an increase in influenza cases in Yucatán, a situation that has persisted in recent weeks, and one death has already been recorded.

Reports from the National Epidemiological Surveillance System (Sinave) indicate that there were 63 new cases of this disease during the inter-seasonal period (May-October), bringing the state’s total to 453 during this period.

Similarly, health authorities revealed the first death of a person from this disease.

Sinave reports that Yucatán continues to lead the nation in terms of infections of this disease, followed by the state of Guerrero with 171 positive influenza cases and 3 deaths from this cause.

Influenza is a respiratory disease that, although commonly associated with the winter season, can also occur at other times of the year, such as during this inter-seasonal phase.

The transmission of the virus is favored by sudden temperature changes and high population mobility, which has contributed to the increase in cases in Yucatán.

Following Yucatán are Campeche, reporting 147 positive influenza cases and 5 deaths, Tabasco with 114 confirmed cases and one death, Quintana Roo with 96 confirmed cases and 5 deaths, and Mexico City with 90 confirmed cases and 2 deaths.

It was highlighted that nationally, 1,914 positive influenza cases have been confirmed, along with 41 deaths during this inter-seasonal period.

Most of the confirmed cases correspond to influenza type A H3N2, mainly in the age groups of 25 to 29 years, over 65 years, 20 to 24 years, 30 to 34 years, and 1 to 4 years.
