Oaxaca Teachers Protest: They Don’t Want Mario Delgado in the SEP

Teachers from Section 22 of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE) marched in the city of Oaxaca to oppose the appointment of Mario Delgado Carrillo as the head of the Ministry of Education (SEP) on the morning of Tuesday, October 1, 2024, during the inauguration of Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.

According to the union leadership, the march aimed to express the stance of this teachers’ union regarding the start of a new federal administration, in which education workers disagree with the appointment of Mario Delgado as the head of the SEP.

Additionally, Section 22 called for 20% of its members to march in Mexico City, from the vicinity of Metro San Cosme to the Hemiciclo a Juárez, to highlight their demands during Claudia Sheinbaum’s inauguration.

According to union leader Yenni Pérez Martínez, the outgoing president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, failed to fulfill his promise to repeal the education reform, leaving the teaching profession in debt.

For the Oaxacan teachers, despite AMLO’s campaign promises, his term was a continuation of previous governments serving the oligarchy (the wealthiest) and suppressing social protests and the people.

Also today, in the city of Oaxaca, the capital of the state with the same name, teachers from San Gabriel Mixtepec took over the union building and blocked traffic on Armenta y López Street to demand payment for pending hours and a dialogue with their union leadership.
