Airbnb is regulated in Baja California: Secture

Airbnb’s operation is regulated in Baja California and there are no difficulties with the collection of taxes that contribute to the state, said the state Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Aguíñiga Rodríguez.

Unlike other states in the Republic that have intensified the supervision of the operation of this type of platforms, Aguíñiga Rodríguez rejected that there will be new provisions in the state.

Airbnb does not comply with the established quality standards
“Baja California was the spearhead and was one of the first to collect the lodging tax for platforms. What is happening in the rest of the country is that they are following states like Baja California, which already had the lodging tax for platforms,” he commented.

The state official specified that said tax is 5% in the state, a figure that is similar for both hotels and technological platforms.

“We are advising several states together with the federal government, on the way in which Baja California is working with the tax so that other states do it. I would say that what is happening in the rest of the country is following what Baja California has been doing for a couple of years,” he added.

Finally, the Secretary of Tourism ruled out that there is any annoyance among hoteliers due to the growth of Airbnb or that there are any intentions to impose more restrictions.

“They can coexist, they are working in a normal way, what is being done the most is on the lodging tax, which was something that hoteliers nationwide were asking for, but I repeat, in Baja California we already had it and it does not change how we were working with platforms, with which we have very good communication and we work very closely with hoteliers,” he concluded.
