What is known about the Cabrera Sarabia brothers, who are mentioned in Los Chapitos’ narco-banners?

Almost a week after leaflets against Los Chapitos were distributed in several municipalities of Sinaloa, the faction of the Sinaloa Cartel led by the Guzmán Salazar brothers decided to respond by placing “narco-banners,” in which they accuse two members of the rival group of the current wave of violence in Durango and Zacatecas. This is what is known about them.

During the early hours of October 3, residents of Culiacán reported to the authorities the presence of banners supposedly signed by “La Chapiza” in areas such as Álvaro Obregón, Malecón Nuevo and Puente Negro, according to Ríodoce.

Although the authorities quickly removed the “narco-banners,” several motorists managed to take photographs of both banners. In one of them, Los Chapitos sent the following message to the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo:

“President. These characters are the causers of all the violence in the state of Durango and Zacatecas, responsible for the murders of innocent people, extortion from sawmills, mines, brothels, cargo trucks, restaurants, piracy, construction companies, etc. Now they want to do the same in the municipalities of Mazatlán and Culiacán.”

Along with this message, there were the photographs and names of the accused, identified as José Luis ―’El JL’― and Alejandro ―’El 02′― Cabrera Sarabia; two of four brothers who, according to the United States authorities, had been working for the Pacific Cartel since 1996.

Sponsors of ‘El Mayito Flaco’

According to the “narcomantas”, José Luis and Alejandro Cabrera Sarabia currently serve as sponsors of Ismael Zambada Sicairos, alias ‘El Mayito Flaco’; the son of Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada who currently heads La Mayiza.

In this regard, it highlights that both brothers were designated by the US Treasury Department in March 2018, after being identified as suppliers of heroin and marijuana for the Sinaloa Cartel.

“The Cabrera Sarabia brothers are being designated for materially helping, supporting, providing services and/or acting on behalf of or representing Ismael Zambada García, the Sinaloa Cartel and/or Joaquín Guzmán Loera,” reads a document.

According to an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), José Luis, Alejandro and their other two brothers ―Felipe and Luis Alberto― began to play a fundamental role in the notorious drug cartel since 1996 through the trafficking of marijuana, cocaine and heroin.

For its part, data from the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) from 2011 indicate that the Cabrera Sarabia brothers, originally from the community of Vasco Gil in Canelas, Durango, initially dedicated themselves to marijuana planting and cultivation activities in the mountainous area of the state of Durango.

Felipe, the brother with the greatest leadership

Felipe Cabrera Sarabia, identified as ‘El Inge’ and ‘The King of Heroin’, became the most notorious of the four brothers.

Born on March 17, 1978, he became lieutenant of ‘El Mayo’ Zambada in Durango, where he controlled large-scale marijuana and poppy cultivation operations. The US reports that he was also responsible for transporting drugs into its territory.

“Felipe Cabrera Sarabia also obtained tons of cocaine from Zambada García and transported the cocaine to the United States, specifically to the Chicago, Illinois area,” reads a report.

In 2011, at the age of 50, ‘El Inge’ was captured. Nine years later, on June 12, 2020, he was extradited to the country of the stars and stripes to face three charges of drug trafficking.

“The violence with which Cabrera Sarabia maintained control of his criminal activities earned him a rise in importance within the organization of ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, becoming a key player in drug trafficking; even providing security to this boss in his area of operation in the Sierra de Durango,” the Mexican Army reported at the time.

“He helped Zambada García transport tons of narcotics to the United States through the state of Baja California,” the US accused.

In 2012, Alberto Cabrera Sarabia, ‘El Arqui’, died in a confrontation with the Armed Forces in Canatlán, Durango. A year later, the authorities arrested Alejandro Cabrera Sarabia in Culiacán, although he is currently said to be operating at large.

‘El Mayo’ Zambada was protected by the Cabrera Sarabia brothers
According to journalist Anabel Hernández, a few years ago, the now ex-leader of the Sinaloa Cartel used to spend much of his time in El Álamo, a small town in Culiacán surrounded by leafy trees, rural roads and approximately 200 inhabitants.

However, the Mexican journalist says that in recent years, due to the conflict that his faction has with Los Chapitos, the notorious drug trafficker was forced to leave his lands and move.

“Due to the deadly tension between Los Zambada and Los Chapitos, it is said that ‘El Mayo’ spent a lot of time in Durango, where he felt protected by the Cabrera Sarabia brothers, his partners in drug trafficking for years, and in Sonora,” Hernández revealed in a column.

Zambada García was arrested on July 25 in El Paso, Texas.
