One of the benefits that Mexican workers enjoy the most is the payment of the Bonus, which in 2024 could undergo a historic change if the new Legislature approves the increase from 15 to 30 days, which would mean a considerable improvement in the purchasing power of the economically active population, especially on dates of so many expenses such as the December holidays.
The Bonus became a benefit more than 50 years ago, however, since its conception and stipulation in the Federal Labor Law, the days that can be received as payment have never been increased. For this reason, the deputy Gabriela Benavides Cobos, of the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico, presented a constitutional reform in the Chamber for the benefit of citizens.
What is the Double Bonus in Mexico?
Also known as the “Aguinaldo Digno” initiative, the aim is to double the amount of the Aguinaldo in Mexico as currently established by law. According to legislator Benavides, this would be a sign of gratitude and thanks to the country’s employees, who must cover numerous expenses and this reform aims to help them with more money.
Formally, the Aguinaldo is considered a labor benefit that consists of a single payment in addition to the monthly salary and is granted to workers in Mexico before December 20 of each year. It currently consists of 15 days of salary and is mandatory for all employers with at least three months of service in the same company, as established in the Federal Labor Law in its article 87.
What is going on with the 30-day Aguinaldo reform in Mexico?
The Green Party Parliamentary Group presented the reform proposal to the House of Representatives, while millions of workers in the country cross their fingers for it to be approved in these last weeks of the year and thus be able to enjoy the Double Bonus this 2024.
“An improvement in the productivity of workers must be accompanied, not only by an increase in their salary, but also by a decent and fairer bonus, which would represent for families the possibility of covering expenses associated with health, education for their children, the payment of taxes that must be covered at the beginning of the year and even allocating a percentage to recreation and family entertainment,” said Deputy Benavides in a statement.
This initiative will have to be voted on in the Chambers to receive the green light. Later, the Executive headed by Claudia Sheinbaum will have to promulgate the corresponding modification to the Federal Labor Law in the Official Gazette of the Federation. Once published there, the 30-day Double Bonus will be official in Mexico.
Which workers would not receive a double bonus in Mexico?
Workers hired for a fee, who do not have a formal employment relationship with their employer.
Workers in formal micro-enterprises might not benefit from this measure. These companies, which often operate with very tight profit margins, might not have the financial capacity to assume the additional cost of a double bonus.
Employees of companies on the verge of collapse could also be left out. These companies might not be in a position to pay a double bonus, especially if they are struggling to stay afloat.
Workers who already receive 30 or more days of bonuses, mainly those in state service who receive up to a month and a half of payment for this benefit at the end of the year.
