Don’t fall into traps! Crime in Mexico evolves along with technology, as in recent years, cybercriminals have found new ways to deceive people, stealing their personal and banking data, but how do online scams work in the country? This is known.

The Cyber ​​Police revealed that they receive more than 300 reports of online scams every day; 60% of them are about fraud in different forms such as phishing or smishing.

How do online scams work?

There are different types of online scams, among which the creation of fake pages or pop-up screens stands out, which are usually sent by text message or WhatsApp messages, posing as official companies or institutions.

Generally, cybercriminals use links or QR codes to steal data, sent through a message showing a job offer that is difficult to reject, travel discounts, or even problems with the address of orders. The goal is to obtain as much information as possible in order to carry out the fraud.

“I receive a link via WhatsApp, which was exactly the same as the airline’s website (…) It was a very good promotion, for round-trip tickets from Guadalajara to Oaxaca,” explained Mariane Johnson, a fraud victim, for an interview with Fuerza Informativa Azteca (FIA).

How to avoid being a victim of fraud in Mexico?

The National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Users of Financial Services (Condusef) revealed that from January to July 2024, there were around 5,000 reports for unrecognized online purchases, 30% more than in 2023, but how can I avoid being a victim of internet fraud?

Don’t open suspicious SMS or WhatsApp messages
Check that links are safe before opening them, the same goes for QR codes
