Following an agreement with the General Secretariat of the Government of Chiapas, residents of the municipality of Aldama released the former mayor for customs and practices, Alonso Pérez Santiz, and three other people who were held for 12 days.
On September 26, it was reported that Pérez Santiz was intercepted by allegedly armed men in San Cristóbal de las Casas. His term as a public official ended on September 30, so his detention began when he was still municipal president of Aldama.
A couple of days after he was deprived of his freedom, residents of the community of Chayomté showed a video that showed the now former mayor dressed as a woman and tied to the posts of a public sports field.
Presumably, these acts would have been committed as a form of retaliation for the failure to complete various public works during his administration.
Alonso Pérez Santiz promised to speak with members of the council to negotiate a possible solution to the issue of unfinished projects; meanwhile, his family asked the intervention of state authorities so that the mayor could be released.
Various journalistic reports indicate that during the period in which the former mayor was held, residents of Chayomté demanded payment of a monetary sum that increased every day for his freedom.
It was not until recent days that the General Secretariat of the Government of Chiapas established an agreement with the Aldama City Council, as well as with representatives of the communities of Juxtón and Chayomte, to pay a sum of just over one million 300 thousand pesos, according to information shared by Radio Fórmula.
Although it did not refer to the amount supposedly delivered, the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) confirmed that Pérez Santiz and three other people were released thanks to the aforementioned deal.
“As a result of a Negotiation Table, the people detained in the facilities of the Indigenous Justice Prosecutor’s Office were handed over,” the state corporation stated.
At the time of the release of Pérez Santiz, José “N”, Felipe “N” and Domingo “N”, personnel from the Public Ministry attached to the Indigenous Justice Prosecutor’s Office of the FGE were present. Once at the disposition of the authorities, the four men were referred for medical evaluation to verify their state of health.
Likewise, several representatives of the General Secretariat of Government were present, as well as the current municipal president by uses and customs of Aldama, Lucio Manuel López Pérez, accompanied by a delegation from the City Council.
This is the third time that residents have deprived former mayor Pérez Santiz of his freedom. On previous occasions he was accused of alleged misappropriation of resources.
“From the first day of our administration, October 1, we have maintained this communication and dialogue to mediate the issue of the arrest of our colleague,” said the current mayor on the subject. No authority explained the origin of the money that was allegedly given to the captors of the former official.
