NEI Teachers Block San Cristóbal-Tuxtla Gutiérrez Highway

As scheduled, this morning, Friday, October 11, around 200 teachers from the Indigenous Education Level of the Regional Coordinator of the Highlands of Chiapas, of the National Union of Education Workers (NEI-CRACH-SNTE), gathered on the toll road section of San Cristóbal Tuxtla Gutiérrez, where they set up a roadblock.

The indigenous teachers set up the roadblock after 10 AM at kilometer 46, to demand the establishment of a negotiation table between officials from the Chiapas Ministry of Education and a commission of Indigenous Education Level teachers to discuss the issue of the teaching profession, one of which is the hiring of teachers for various educational institutions in communities in the Highlands of Chiapas region, construction of schools, payment of salaries to interim teachers overdue for more than 3 years, among other problems faced by indigenous teachers.

At the roadblock point, they detained vehicles from national companies, blocking the middle of the asphalt strip to prevent vehicular passage, while some small vehicles returned to Tuxtla Gutiérrez, others took alternate routes to reach San Cristóbal de las Casas, so motorists sought alternate routes to reach both cities.

The teachers indicated that this blockade is total and could be lifted until 4 PM today. They hope to be summoned to a meeting in the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez to follow up and seek a solution to their demands. Meanwhile, the approximately 200 teachers will remain at the roadblock at kilometer 46 of the San Cristóbal-Tuxtla Gutiérrez toll road.
