There are more than 20 thousand missing people in Baja California: Activist

In Baja California there are more than 20 thousand missing people, estimated the leader of the collective “Una Nación Buscando T”, Angélica Ramírez.

During a conversation held at the Noroeste Station of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the activist indicated that the most recent figure from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), only contemplates 17 thousand 200, but until 2022.

She explained that after analysis by human rights defenders, civil organizations and specialists in the field, it was concluded that this 2024 the number has already exceeded 20 thousand, considering factors such as migration, labor dynamics, tourists who come to the region and people displaced by violence.

“There are people who come to this border looking for a new way of life and disappear. We also have missing persons who have not been reported because their families do not know. They are people who believe that they went to the United States, that they found a partner or lost their phone and nothing has been heard from them,” she said.

The leader of the collective “Una Nación Buscando T” pointed out that organizations like the ones she leads also carry out field searches to locate people who may be alive.

“It is not that something bad has happened to them, many of them get hooked on addictions and end up homeless and we have to look for them,” she added.

Angélica Ramírez admitted that it is difficult to arrive at an exact figure of how many people are missing, since the dynamics of this border prevent an accurate record.

“Tijuana is a floating city, changing culture. Every day new people arrive and just as they arrive, they also leave. It is a very changing and floating city, that is why there is no exact figure,” she concluded.
