The private initiative of Durango considered it an opportunity to promote local tourism in the wake of the recent events of violence that have been registered in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, and the reduction of visitors to this tourist destination.

Nayeli Victorino García, president of the Chamber of Commerce of Durango, commented that the travel agencies associated with the chamber have registered up to 70 percent drop in reservations for end-of-year trips to Mazatlán.

“This economy will stop being perceived and it has to be addressed,” commented the president of Canaco.

However, she considered it positive for the Durango residents who are going to stay in the state and can do local tourism.

The vice president of the Business Coordinating Council (CCE) Antonio Félix Sariñana, added that since Durango is a city where tourism from other places transits, the option will have to be taken advantage of so that tourists will come to Durango.

“They will not be able to go to Mazatlán because of the insecurity. We can offer cabin tourism and that of Durango,” she commented.

Durango and Mazatlán are connected by the super highway that has boosted tourism since its launch. However, due to the violence in Sinaloa, which has already reached the tourist destination, a reduction in visitors is reported.

The governor of Durango, Esteban Villegas, recommended that Durango residents not visit Mazatlán for security reasons.

“You have to think twice and be a little careful,” said the state leader.
