Between the Sinaloa Cartel and the CJNG: the criminal groups that operate in Nayarit

Nayarit is located between the states of Sinaloa and Jalisco, the latter being places where the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG) have a strong presence, respectively. Authorities have identified the activities of three criminal groups in the state.

For their part, elements of the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) carried out the arrest of seven people in the municipality of Huajicori in Nayarit. The security agents were attacked by armed civilians but were ultimately arrested along with seven “high-powered” firearms.

Although the arrest of seven people was carried out on November 4, the events were reported on the 6th, the date on which the murder of two people, alleged members of La Mayiza, was also reported in Huajicori, which would be the responsibility of the CJNG.

The document Security Strategy for the First 100 Days details the criminal structures that operate in the state governed by Miguel Ángel Navarro. On the map showing the regional cartels in Mexican territory, Nayarit appears painted in gray.

On this map, the gray color is used to identify the states in which the CJNG operates, which has activities in at least 13 entities. However, a yellow dot also appears, meaning that operations of the Sinaloa Cartel have been recorded, according to the map published by the State Commission on Human Rights (CEDH) of Michoacán.

A second white dot reveals operations of the Beltrán Leyva, which would mean that there are three criminal groups present in Nayarit.

For his part, last September the state attorney general, Petronilo Díaz Ponce Medrano, said that it is a state with “good security conditions.” On that occasion, there was a reinforcement of security in the northern part, on the border with Sinaloa.

The prosecutor himself explained that there are places where violent events have occurred, such as in Tecuala and Huajicori, the latter site where 11 bodies were found, apparently the result of a confrontation between the Sinaloa Cartel and the CJNG, as reported by the press last September.

“There are clashes in Huajicori, which is already Nayarit, for three or four days two groups have been fighting there,” said then-President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

While a report presented by the organization México Evalúa highlights that Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa are entities that were identified with a positive level (in the case of Jalisco) and regular (for Nayarit and Sinaloa).
