A caravan of 2,500 migrants, comprising individuals from various nationalities, has resumed its journey towards the USA after resting for a day in Escuintla, Chiapas. The group traveled over 30 kilometers along the Mexico 200 highway on Saturday, moving closer to northern Mexico.
Franklin, one of the caravan coordinators, emphasized the need for humanitarian aid, particularly for women and children who are struggling with the exhausting journey. “There are many children and women who are already very sore on their feet. The only thing we ask is that they help us move forward,” he said.
David Vega, an immigrant from Ecuador, shared that he embarked on this journey to escape extortion by organized crime in his country. He expressed his hope that President-elect Donald Trump would not close the US-Mexico border or stigmatize all undocumented immigrants. “Let President Trump think about immigrants. Immigrants are not like he thinks; not all immigrants are criminals. Immigrants are different,” Vega stated.
The caravan began its journey last Tuesday in Tapachula, coinciding with the US elections where Donald Trump won the presidency against Democrat Kamala Harris. Following Trump’s victory, migrants have expressed growing concern about potential changes at the Mexican border when Trump takes office in January.
