Urgent Need for Social Housing in Merida, Warns AMPI

Iván Cervera López, president of the Mexican Association of Real Estate Professionals (AMPI) in Merida, has highlighted a significant social housing deficit in Yucatan, despite the lack of official data to quantify it.

Cervera López noted that the Chamber of the Construction Industry in the state has pointed out the neglect of the social housing sector, with most developments focusing on residential housing. This focus makes it difficult for those seeking properties under two million pesos to find viable options.

“Today, the supply of housing under one and a half million pesos is practically non-existent, further limiting options for the majority of the population that needs affordable housing solutions,” he said.

 Call for Government Intervention

Cervera López emphasized the need for government intervention to address this issue. He mentioned that private sector representatives and experts have stressed the importance of resuming subsidy schemes and programs where the government not only provides land but also ensures it is used for social housing, while preventing corruption.

He also underscored the necessity for development companies to adhere to social responsibility criteria, ensuring that housing is not only affordable but also decent and safe for families.
