After Andrés Manuel López Obrador left the Presidency of Mexico, there has been speculation about what he does and how he leads his life. It is known that he lives in Chiapas, on his property, but how does he do it and who takes care of him?

43 days after leaving the Presidency of the Republic, Andrés Manuel López Obrador continues to receive security from the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) on his farm located in Palenque, Chiapas.

According to a request for information with folio 3300264 24002874 made by El Universal, the Sedena reported that former President López Obrador —who left his post on October 1st upon the arrival of Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo— has a “security and protection scheme” at his private home located in Palenque, which is an inheritance from his parents.

The agency in charge of Ricardo Trevilla Trejo detailed that the protection received by the former president of Mexico is in charge of “a group of military personnel” belonging to the same military institution.

This was made known when information was requested from the Sedena regarding whether the Government of Mexico provides personal security to former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador on the occasion of the transition to the administration of the Morena member Sheinbaum Pardo, President of Mexico.

This newspaper published on October 7 that, with security cameras, a new sidewalk and surveillance, the farm that López Obrador would occupy was already ready, who moved to that place in the south after leaving the National Palace due to the arrival to the position of Sheinbaum Pardo as constitutional President of the United Mexican States.

He also explained that the perimeter of the “La Chingada” farm was fenced with wire and is guarded by security elements, since next to the Tabasco native’s farm there is a hotel that has a pool where the presence of video surveillance cameras pointing to the farm can be seen.

A few meters below there is an old wooden bridge that crosses a pond shared by both properties, an area that is constantly monitored by security elements.

López Obrador, at the beginning of his administration in 2018, withdrew privileges (pensions and personal escort) from former presidents, including Vicente Fox Quesada and Felipe Calderón Hinojosa.

However, in April 2019, the former president reported that eight security elements were assigned to each of former presidents Vicente Fox and Felipe Calderón, in response to their requests to continue maintaining protection.

Calderón Hinojosa made a request through a letter in which he explained the reasons for having protection, and Fox Quesada published in 2019 on his Twitter account (now X) that an alleged armed commando tried to enter his home located in the state of Guanajuato.

López Obrador detailed that they would have that protection for as long as necessary.

Previously, the Tabasco native criticized that, although he was going to provide security to the former federal presidents, they would have to take charge of their own surveillance, and revealed that there were 80 elements in total, guarding them, so it was a budget of around 50 million pesos for each former president.

According to the instruction that the former president gave to the then head of the Sedena, Luis Cresencio Sandoval, he asked for “an efficient security team, without the excesses that the former presidents had, because there were many elements of the [disappeared] Presidential General Staff, dedicated to the care of the former presidents.”

Sheinbaum’s security

A month before taking the oath as president of Mexico, and in light of the attack against the then Republican candidate for the presidency of the United States, Donald Trump, Sheinbaum ruled out reinforcing her security when she was in power, since that would distance her from the people, which goes against the principles of the self-proclaimed Fourth Transformation, in addition to the fact that she will not stop touring the country.

El Universal has confirmed that Sheinbaum Pardo flies on planes with two assistants, who are close to her and who receive the requests that people make to her, while when leaving the airports she uses a Suburban-type van and her escort travels in another vehicle. At public events, her same team of assistants is the one that protects her, without firearms in sight and allowing people to approach her.
