Parres El Guarda Residents to Block Mexico-Cuernavaca Highway on Sunday

Residents of Parres El Guarda in the Tlalpan municipality, supported by local authorities, have announced a blockade of the Mexico-Cuernavaca federal highway at kilometer 40 in both directions this Sunday. The blockade will begin at 11 a.m. in protest against what they describe as a “lack of commitment” by previous central government administrations to resolve ongoing flooding issues caused by works carried out by the Mexico City Water System (SACMEX), now the Water Secretariat.

Reason for the Protest

Representatives of Parres El Guarda residents stated that previous administrations had promised a definitive solution to the flooding problem. However, instead of resolving the issue, they are now removing the pumping infrastructure that was supposed to alleviate the accumulation of stormwater runoff. This has forced the residents to take extreme measures, leading to the planned highway closure.

Demands and Conditions

The protesters have warned that the closure will remain in place until authorities from the mayor’s office and the central government arrive at the site and present a proposal for definitive actions to prevent further damage to their homes and household furniture.
