Which states in Mexico are women most at risk of being victims of femicide?

The Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP) reported which states in Mexico are most at risk of being victims of femicide, based on its Common Law Crime Incidence Report for January to October 2024.

Although in the last 10 months the trend of femicides has been on the decline —compared to previous years—, in some federal entities the number of cases has increased, such as Chihuahua, Morelos, Puebla and Veracruz.

In this regard, 2021 remains the year with the most femicides, with 981 files recorded.

In the framework of November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, at El Economista we review which are the states with the most cases of femicides so far this year.

According to the SESNSP, 667 files have been registered for femicide from January to October 2024, with May being the most violent month for women with 83 cases.

In a comparison with 2023, corresponding to the same period referred to, this 2024 has 50 fewer cases, since from January to October 2023 the investigation of

717 femicides began, with March being the most violent month for women with 88 files.

The seven states where women are most at risk of being victims of femicide

Edomex: 59 femicides, with January and September being the months with the most violent records. Compared to 2023, the authorities had counted 80 files corresponding to the 10 months referred to.
Nuevo León 55 occupies second place so far this year, with May being the month with the most femicides.
Morelos is in third place with 47, eight more compared to January-October 2023 when only 39 cases were reported.
Veracruz is in fourth place with 46 cases, five more compared to 2023; May was the most violent for women with nine cases recorded.

Mexico City decreased its figure from 52 in 2023 to 45 in these 10 months. However, in the months of January, February and June, 7 femicides were recorded each.
Chihuahua reported 41 femicides, one more than in 2023; September was the most dangerous for women.
In Puebla, the figure went from 31 cases in 2023 to 39 from January to October 2024, with May and September reporting 7 cases each.
