Migrant rights activist Luis Rey García Villagrán warned foreigners in transit who are moving forward in caravans in Tehuantepec, Oaxaca and Mapastepec, Chiapas, not to “believe the lies of immigration authorities” to convince them to abandon the route with promises of regularizing their immigration status in the country, because later they are left to their own devices and subsequently deported.
“We know that officials from the National Migration Institute (INM) are trying to convince migrants from both caravans to accept regularizing their stay in Mexico. They are offering them bus transfers to a shelter in the DIF system.
In the name of God, I ask you not to accept, not to fall into these traps because we have dozens of testimonies of migrants deceived in Oaxaca, who were abandoned in Guerrero, Michoacán, Campeche and Yucatán,” García Villagrán asked in a video broadcast this Saturday from Tapachula, Chiapas.
In addition, “in the name of God,” he demanded that the INM stop deceiving migrants, because “they are human beings in highly vulnerable conditions, who deserve respect for their rights.”
García Villagrán recalled that in Oaxaca the State Attorney General’s Office (FGEO) has announced rescue operations of migrants held against their will in homes in the city of Juchitán, which reflects, he explained, that the caravans are moving without security protocols.
The activist called on the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, to guarantee the transit of migrants and to order the INM to stop playing with their needs.
“The migrants, tired of walking, sleeping poorly and eating poorly, agree to go on buses, but they are abandoned far away,” he reproached the Mexican government.
