The coffee harvest in Veracruz is delayed, there are still few harvests and yields are low, warned members of the Regional Coffee Council of Coatepec and the National Coordinator of Coffee Organizations (CNOC).
Producers indicated that there could be a drop in prices during the 2024-2025 harvest, which begins in November and ends in February.
“What should not happen is that there are abuses and more so if the harvest is crowded. We must remember what AMSA and other companies did in January 2022.”
At that time, coffee growers were protesting against AMSA in the Ixhuatlán del Café mill due to the price penalties that seriously affected them.
However, they were accused by the company of causing a fire in its facilities. Five coffee growers were imprisoned and arrest warrants were issued against seven others. The criminal process continues.
The coffee growers indicated that on November 22, in the Huatusco region, the price per kilo of cherry coffee was 11 pesos on average.
“In the Coatepec region, the average price did not reach 10 pesos per kilo of cherry. With the closing of the Stock Market on November 22 at 302.20 dollars for 100 pounds, a premium, overprice or positive differential of about 20.00 dollars on average above the Stock Market and a peso-dollar exchange rate on November 22, the kilo of cherry, even with a bad yield of 350 kilos of cherry or a little less for a quintal of parchment, should not be paid at less than 14.00 pesos per kilo of cherry,” they added.
It is reported that the quintal of parchment is being paid at around 4,500 pesos, when according to the references indicated it should not be less than 5,200 pesos, that is, 90 pesos per kilogram.
