In a significant effort to combat beach pollution, a cleanup event in Isla Mujeres recovered over 2,500 square meters of beach. Organized as part of World Cleanup Day, the event was led by the For Better or For Bad movement, with support from the Environment and Ecology Department, the Youth Department of Isla Mujeres, and Philip Morris Mexico. Eighty volunteers participated in the initiative.
Focus on Cigarette Butts
The cleanup focused on collecting cigarette butts, a major source of beach pollution that severely impacts ecosystems. The results were impressive, with 30,000 cigarette butts collected, which can contaminate up to 960,000 liters of water. Additionally, 60 kilos of plastic and other waste were removed.
Each cigarette butt contains toxic substances that contaminate water and soil, taking up to 15 years to decompose.
Community Involvement
Roberto Palafox, spokesperson for Para Bien o Para Mal, emphasized the importance of collective action in protecting the environment. “Every small step counts when it comes to protecting the environment. The participation of society, together with companies and governments, is essential to generate a positive impact,” he said.
Future Initiatives
The event concluded with an open invitation for the community to join future cleanup activities and adopt sustainable practices to keep Mexican beaches clean.
