Taxi Drivers Attack Tourists in Xcaret, Mistaking Them for Uber Drivers

A video circulating on social media shows taxi drivers from the Lázaro Cárdenas del Río union attacking tourists at the entrance to the Xcaret ecotourism park, mistakenly believing they were Uber drivers.

The video captures a taxi driver exiting his vehicle and confronting the driver of a private car upon arrival at Xcaret. The scene, set against the backdrop of palm trees characteristic of the park’s entrance, shows two Playa del Carmen taxi units surrounding the private car. One of the units is identified by the economic number 2463.

Inside the car, the driver questions the taxi driver, “What is your problem? What do you want, brother?” The taxi driver responds, accusing the driver of providing a service and deceiving him. The driver insists, “It is not a service, they are my friends, what is the problem… they are crazy, I don’t know.”

Escalation and Damage

The video later shows the taxi unit blocking the private car, with the driver recording the events from inside. In a subsequent shot, the driver points out that his windshield was broken and claims he was shot at. So far, the union organization has not issued any information about the incident.

Lack of Response

Attempts by the Novedades Quintana Roo team to interview Luis Herrera Quiam, general secretary of the Lázaro Cárdenas del Río taxi union, were unsuccessful. Herrera Quiam also serves as general secretary of the Solidaridad city council. The Quintana Roo State Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo) has also not made any statements regarding the matter.

Context

Uber does not operate in Playa del Carmen; however, there have been instances of attacks on members of the digital platform in Riviera Maya hotels when they allegedly carry tickets from Cancun.
