The holiday season is coming, and you will surely have the opportunity to travel with the family. Although there are several incredible tourist destinations within Chihuahua, if you are willing to venture a little further, visiting the Magical Town of Álamos, in Sonora, is an excellent option.
A magical town full of history and culture
According to the Government of Mexico and México Desconocido website, the town that is located very close to the border with Sinaloa and Chihuahua, Álamos stands out as a place where history, architecture and nature converge.
This charming destination was founded in 1685 under the name of Real de la Limpia Concepción de los Álamos and is located at the foot of the Sierra de Álamos, a protected natural area of great biodiversity. Its semi-dry and semi-warm climate, with average annual temperatures of 24 °C, makes it a pleasant place throughout the year.
Its historical heyday was thanks to mining, driven by the discovery of the La Europea vein, which left as a legacy the exquisite colonial architecture that characterizes the town today. Among its main attractions is the Plaza de Armas, an emblematic space where its Moorish kiosk, surrounded by palm trees and gardens, invites you to stroll and relax.
Other must-see places include the Municipal Palace, with its elegant design supported by 48 iron columns; the Parish of La Purísima Concepción, a religious jewel from the colonial era; and the Mirador, from where you can get spectacular views of the town and the mountains.
The legacy of María Félix and other cultural experiences
One of the most visited sites in Álamos is the María Félix Museum, dedicated to the famous actress known as “La Doña.” This museum exhibits more than 700 personal objects, including dresses, photographs and magazines that narrate the life of this iconic star of Mexican Golden Age Cinema.
Álamos is also known for being the birthplace of Dr. Alfonso Ortiz Tirado, a tenor, doctor and composer. In his honor, the Alfonso Ortiz Tirado International Festival is held every January, which brings together artists and music lovers from various parts of the world.
In addition to its rich cultural offering, Álamos has luxury options such as the Hacienda de los Santos, one of the most exclusive accommodations in the country. Its colonial architecture, spaces decorated with antiques and services such as a spa with spectacular views make the stay an unforgettable experience.
