One year after celebrating the signing of the memorandum of understanding with the government of the state of Colima, Airbnb revealed that it has begun to retain the lodging tax (ISH) in the entity, starting in September 2024.
“With this entity, there are now 19 states in the country where the platform collects and delivers this tax to local authorities,” the company reported in a statement.
“From 2017 to the end of 2023, Airbnb has collected more than 2.2 billion pesos nationwide,” it said.
What is the ISH and what is it for?
The digital platform reported that said collection and retention of the ISH is a measure to boost the presence and offer of Colima as a tourist destination, formalizing the activity and encouraging responsible tourism among the community of hosts in the state.
“With this agreement, Airbnb becomes another ally for Colima along with the hotel and service sector,” said Jorge Padilla, the state’s Undersecretary of Tourism.
“This comprehensive alliance is a clear example that full collaboration between authorities and platforms is essential to promote tourism development and the well-being of local communities,” he said.
The official mentioned that the retention of the lodging tax (ISH) by Airbnb is a relevant sum in its objective of consolidating Colima as an important tourist destination.
“This is a great step that has already been taken with Airbnb and we will continue working hard from the state government to ensure that all lodging platforms comply with their tax obligations,” said Jorge Padilla.
Airbnb explained that in the specific case of Colima, the agreement includes a campaign to promote its tourist attractions mainly for the benefit of micro and small entrepreneurs and to promote the fiscal competitiveness of short-term stay platforms.
Likewise, the creation of a statistical information portal with relevant data for the development and dissemination of the state’s tourist offer will be sought, he said.
