Recent arrests in Yucatán have highlighted the increasing presence of drug cartel leaders in a state known for its security. At least twelve individuals linked to various drug cartels operating in Tabasco, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo were detained, revealing the region’s growing appeal as a refuge and operational base for these criminals.
High-Profile Arrests in Mérida
Among those arrested were five high-profile criminals from Tabasco, including Bruno G.M., alias “El Choki,” leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) in Tabasco. Captured in Mérida along with four members of his group, “El Choki” was a priority target for federal authorities due to his involvement in drug distribution, extortion, and kidnapping of Central Americans. He was also the right-hand man of former “La Barredora” leader Carlos Tomas.
The State Investigation Police (PEI) arrested “El Choki” and his group for carrying prohibited substances and replicas of firearms. Following their initial hearing, they were placed in preventive detention. The other detainees were identified as Francisco Javier E.C., alias “Misho,” Antonio L.P., alias “Tonio,” Alejandro P.C., alias “Payro,” and Kevin A.S., alias “Kevin,” all originally from Tabasco.
