Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reported that she asked the Ministry of Energy to meet with gas station owners to discuss gasoline prices, as she said there are places where it is sold above 26 pesos per liter.

The head of the federal Executive indicated, in this sense, that the average price of gasoline is around 23 pesos per liter, but there are areas where it is sold below that figure. She also recalled that both Pemex and private distributors are allowed to import fuels, which adds complexity to market regulation.

Gasoline prices will be updated starting next month by IEPS

Also, the president assured that, in recent days, reports circulated about an alleged increase in the Law of the Special Tax on Production and Services (IEPS) applied to gasoline, so she clarified that this tax has not been modified recently and that any adjustment responds to pre-existing legal provisions.

“The increase in the IEPS is not something that is new, but there is a law from a long time ago that establishes that the price of gasoline will increase,” she said.

However, the president of Mexico assured that her government is committed to avoiding significant increases in real terms, limiting the adjustments only to inflationary variations.

“We are committed to ensuring that gasoline does not increase in real terms, the only thing that can increase is what is related to the inflation of the year,” she assured.
