The reason why Canada increased the expulsions of Mexicans

A possible wave of deportations of Mexican citizens from the United States is expected for 2025, so state governments on the Mexican border are preparing to deal with a possible humanitarian crisis.

However, this is not the only window that our nation’s authorities must address, since during the years 2023 and 2024 the Canadian government significantly increased the number of expulsions of Mexican migrants.

In the last year, Justin Trudeau’s administration tightened immigration measures and in addition to reinstating the visa requirement for citizens of Mexican origin, it also reduced the number of “asylum” applications for those fleeing violence.

Data from journalist Pedro Domínguez, from Milenio, confirm that in 2023 and 2024 Canada deported 1,020 and 1,244 Mexicans, respectively. This is because the Trudeau government has rejected most of the asylum applications, because each one implies a monthly aid of 400 dollars.

It is also influenced by the fact that the authorities of that nation have detected that Mexicans enter requesting protection when in reality they intend to settle down and obtain a job.

Although the figure is well below the 270 thousand annual expulsions that the Joe Biden administration has carried out on average in the US, the repatriation of Mexicans from Canada is beginning to become significant if one takes into account that in 2019 only 12 cases were registered.

The tensions generated in recent months between the governments of Mexico and Canada, in relation to the Free Trade Agreement, could lead to greater migratory pressures and the number of Mexicans expelled could increase.

Although Mexico and Canada have a temporary agricultural worker program, the number of positions could be reduced, this as an additional measure.

The diplomatic relationship between Mexico and Canada, which celebrated 50 years in 2024, has evolved into a strategic partnership based on shared values, trade, multilateral cooperation, and cultural ties.

This relationship was formalized on January 30, 1944, when both countries established permanent diplomatic missions, marking the beginning of a sustained dialogue that has been strengthened over time.

In 2024, both governments commemorated this relationship with cultural events, academic forums, and activities that highlighted the friendship between the countries. These celebrations underscored the importance of continuing to work together on key issues such as trade, mobility, and sustainability, strengthening a relationship that is emerging as a model for cooperation in the 21st century.
