Motorists captured the poor condition of the Baja California Sur transpeninsular highway and warned of the dangers of traveling on the only road that connects the state with the northern region.
By showing the images of the dozens of potholes in various sections of the road, especially in the municipality of Comondú and Mulegé, they warned that it has become a permanent danger, but that it has worsened during this holiday season.
“The authorities do not seem to care that many people put their lives at risk by traveling on the only road that connects the state with the north. Nobody does anything,” said Professor Elia.
She pointed out that when she made a family trip to that region, they faced several unrepaired sections, despite the announcement by the federal and local governments that they would strengthen maintenance.
“The worst thing we had was on the section from Las Pocitas to Villa Morelos (Comondú). Not only is it dangerous for us as a family, but we are damaging the vehicles by having to travel like this. In addition, there is not much room to maneuver with that two-lane highway,” he said.
Complaints about the transpeninsular highway have increased during this week of festivities after Christmas and before the end of the year celebrations.
And it is the only road that connects the municipalities of La Paz -capital- with those of Comondú, Loreto and Mulegé to the north, and crosses the entire peninsula, passing through the neighboring state of Baja California.
Many South Californians have relatives in the neighboring municipalities or in Baja California and during this season they travel to spend the holidays.
“They call it the highway of death, due to the terrible conditions it is in and the many fatal accidents that have occurred due to the hundreds of potholes it has, but where is the governor? Fine, thank you. Traveling by plane,” said the user, José Luis Martínez.
On social media, dozens of users have shared photos and videos about their experience on the different sections of this federal highway, which was included in the program announced by President Claudia Sheinbaum, “Bachetón” last October.
According to the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) of BCS, the federal government budget allocated for the rehabilitation of the highway is 70 million pesos, actions that began in November and will conclude in February 2025.
However, according to user testimonies, at this time no work is observed and they urged the authorities to speed up the road maintenance actions.
The state leader, Víctor Castro Cosió, acknowledged a couple of weeks ago that the repair work on the highway was going “very slowly” and pointed out that some sections can no longer be patched, but rather a complete resurfacing is required.
