2025 has already begun and with it a new stage in the legal process that the United States maintains against Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada, who will have to appear once again in the Federal Court of the Eastern District of New York on January 15. As the date approaches, journalist Anabel Hernández has decided to share new information about the co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel.
The first episode of the Mexican communicator’s podcast, Narcosistema, was released on the afternoon of January 2 under the title ‘Chronicle of a day in the life of El Mayo’ and, as its name indicates, in it the security and drug trafficking expert revealed some aspects of what a day was like for the notorious drug trafficker before being arrested by United States authorities on July 25, 2024.
It is the story of one of the last meetings that Zambada García led as head of the also known Pacific Cartel in March 2024; four months before his capture in El Paso, Texas.
“I was able to reconstruct what his life was like during the last months he was free thanks to a witness who was present at a meeting led by ‘El Mayo’ and his son, held in the vicinity of Culiacán in March 2024,” Hernández explained.
The revelations
According to the witness interviewed by the author of Los señores del narco (2010), in March 2024 Zambada García and Ismael Zambada Sicairos, alias ‘El Mayito Flaco’ – identified as the current leader of La Mayiza – led a meeting with public officials in which he was able to take part.
Initially, the meeting was held only with the son of ‘El Mayo’, but after direct orders from the capo, the participants were transferred to a ranch where Zambada García was with other characters. The place, as reported, was protected by an intense security circle made up of more than 100 bodyguards.
According to the witness, despite his advanced age and the medical complications that became evident after his arrest, ‘El Mayo’ Zambada appeared calm and “in a good mood” that day.
“Despite being in the criminal world for more than 50 years, Zambada García knew how to be kind when the occasion called for it,” Hernández said.
The information indicates that the alleged meeting was intended to bring federal officials to La Mayiza’s side, although the alleged witness provided few details about it.
Hernández also indicated that, that day, Zambada García had revealed an important fact.
“At that meeting (…), ‘El Mayo’ was more talkative than usual. To make his power clear, he said that he constantly traveled outside of Mexico. He came and went calmly (…), he boasted that one of his last trips was to Costa Rica and the paradisiacal beaches of Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic. I need another tan, he said ironically,” the communicator added.

What’s next in the case of ‘El Mayo’ Zambada?
Zambada García is scheduled to appear before federal judge Brian M. Cogan on January 15, 2024. According to reports, that day he will have to decide whether to continue under the representation of attorney Frank A. Pérez and whether to accept the risks of a possible conflict of interest; since the attorney is also the legal defender of Vicente Zambada Niebla, his son, who could be called to testify against him.
Currently, ‘El Mayo’ is being held at the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC Brooklyn), in New York.
