s part of the security strategy for the first 100 days of her government, President Claudia Sheinbaum ordered the deployment of another 540 soldiers to the most violent states in the country: Guanajuato, Sinaloa and Baja California.
Of the total number of Mexican Army and National Guard troops, 180 will be based in Tijuana, Baja California; 180 in Mazatlán, Sinaloa; and 180 in the municipalities of León and Celaya, Guanajuato.
According to the Ministry of National Defense (Defense), the objective of the military will be the implementation of inter-institutional operations in coordination with local forces to inhibit the criminal and violent acts that prevail in the entities that lead the number of intentional homicides during the first three months of Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration.
“The personnel will act firmly at all times, carrying out tasks of deterrence, prevention, patrols, reconnaissance and establishing military security posts that generate an atmosphere of tranquility in the population,” said the Defense.
Data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP) indicate that between October and November 2024, 4,242 investigation files were opened for the crime of intentional homicide throughout the country; however, the figure rises to 7,510 victims in the count of the organization TResearch as of January 5, 2025.
In the analysis that the organization shared on December 26, the state of Guanajuato was among the most violent with 806 intentional homicides recorded under the administration of Claudia Sheinbaum; followed by Sinaloa (491), State of Mexico (486), Baja California (443) and Guerrero (402).
Guanajuato and Baja California are involved in a cartel war for territorial control of two of the most important areas for drug routes to the United States; while violence in Sinaloa broke out on September 9 after the capture of Ismael El Mayo Zambada; the confrontation between La Mayiza and Los Chapitos catapulted the state to second place among the most violent.
In the first 6 days of January alone, the National Security Commission (CNS) counts (in preliminary data) a total of 112 people killed in the three states: Guanajuato 51, Baja California 33, Sinaloa 28. The State of Mexico is added to the list of the most violent entities with 37 victims, but the federal government did not send military personnel to support the administration of Delfina Gómez.
