The Chihuahua government decided to suspend school activities in the face of the imminent winter storm that will bring a drop in temperature of up to 15 degrees below zero and also ordered the opening of 200 shelters throughout the state.
At a press conference, the Undersecretary of Education, Arturo Parga, announced the suspension of school activities throughout the state of Chihuahua.
In turn, the director of Civil Protection of the State, Luis Corral, added that based on the reports of the National Meteorological Service there will be intense snowfall in the mountainous region and in the entire national border strip.
The alert will be concentrated mainly on Thursday and Friday, when the greatest drop in temperatures and snowfall will occur throughout the state, but the actions of suspension of classes and opening of shelters began on Wednesday.
Regarding the 200 temporary shelters, it was explained that they have the capacity to house 42,620 people, or 10,655 families that require support in the event of a major contingency.
Omar Payán Quinto, a meteorologist at JCAS, reported that cold weather, rain, snow and sleet are expected in Janos, Casas Grandes, Madera, Ignacio Zaragoza, Gómez Farías, Namiquipa, Temósachic, Matachí, Ocampo, Guerrero, Maguarichi, Bocoyna, Guachochi, Guadalupe y Calvo, Balleza, Nonoava, Chihuahua, Saucillo, Parral, Delicias, Julimes, Coyame and Manuel Benavides.
Strong winds with gusts exceeding 75 kilometers per hour are also expected. On Thursday, temperatures will begin to drop to 10 to 15 degrees below zero. The government indicated that classes will begin on Monday, January 13.
